Unfortunately, there is too little an interest of the European Union and the US in the developments in Romania's geographical region, and both the Republic of Moldova, and Georgia and Ukraine are facing immense difficulties, Chairman of the Romanian Senate Mircea Geoana said on Tuesday at the close of a debate on the latest developments in Moldova. Geoana argued that the implications of these regional developments could affect not just Romania's national interest, but also the West's.
He mentioned that the participants in the debate hosted by the Parliament Palace of Bucharest agreed with foreign policy non-governmental organistaions to meet again and assess the contributions of the NGOs to the rebuilding of Romania's foreign policy force lines, and do so before May 7, when the European Union is scheduled to assess the partnership between the European Union and the countries east of the EU.
'The developments are dramatic, Romania's interests are at stake and political consistency is needed. I hope the theme of Moldova will not become a theme in the electioneering campaign, because that would be dangerous to Romania's interests and Romania's influence in the region. And I also hope that after this afternoon's speech to be delivered by President Traian Basescu to Parliament we will have a contribution to clarify the way in which the political establishment of the country sees the event,' said Geoana.
He mentioned that today's debate tried to identify a conjugated political response to the unprecedented crisis of democracy in the Republic of Moldova. 'The NGOs have let out a cry of despair that there is a risk for the democratic opposition and the civic resistance of Moldova being subjected to hellish pressure in this period…
We have to rethink the manner in which we get involved in the Eastern space. We need a new policy for the East, a recovery, including of relations with the Russian Federation, and it is obviously Romania's obligation to bring back to the attention of the Western decisions makers the eastern border of the EU and NATO and do this in an efficient manner,' said Geoana.
Attending the debate were Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu, Chairman of the National Council of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Adrian Nastase, Chairman of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs Titus Corlatean, politicians, political analysts, officials for the civil society and non-governmental organisations.
