Basescu: Romania – first destination of Republic of Moldova exports
16 aprilie 2009
Romania is the third source of imports and first destination of Republic of Moldova exports, stated on Tuesday President Traian Basescu in the reunited session of the Parliament in Bucharest.
The head of state said that the economic exchanges between our country and the Republic of Moldova steadily increased, stressing that Republic of Moldova exports to Romania followed a strong upward trend, mainly over the past year, sustained by the assymetrical preferential trade regime adopted by the European Union.
"Romania is now Republic of Moldova third source of imports and the first destination of exports. But Chisinau authorities' reaction has been to attempt to hinder the normal development of these bilateral relations. As such, Romania was repeatedly accused of "imperialism" and of "expansionism", including at the European Court for Human Rights, where Romania did nothing else, but defend the cause of its own citizens", underlined Basescu.
The President pointed out that the Romanian identity "was attacked by falsifying the national history, by placing under a question mark the Romanian language unity, by discouraging affirmation of ethnicity and by applying a discriminating treatment to some Romanian language press institutions".
"Moreover, to issues which can be settled via some technical solutions, such as the request to open two consulates, in Balti and Cahul, or the small border traffic, we received propagandistic replies which affect the very interests of the Republic of Moldova citizens", said the head of state.
On the other hand, Traian Basescu affirmed that Romania unconditionally supports Republic of Moldova, saying that it is in the direct interest of Romania to see Republic of Moldova fulfilling its European destiny, in conformity to its citizens' aspirations to live in security and democratic stability.
"Our country considers that the democratization and modernization of the Republic of Moldova , as well as the observance of its citizens' rights and civil freedoms are fundamental elements which influence the quality of relations with the neighboring state, and they must be pursued irrespective of Chisinau auhtorities political orientation, as long as they are the result of some fair elections.
Without asking something in return, we have become the advocate of the Republic of Moldova's European vocation", maintained the President.
Traian Basescu gave as an example Romania's moves to support Republic of Moldova at the UNO, OSCE, Council of Europe, NATO and other regional organizations and the aid given for the inclusion of the Republic of Moldova into the projects run under the aegis of the South East European Co-operation Process (SEECP), the Central European Free Trade Agreement (CEFTA), the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), the Southern European Cooperative Initiative (SECI).
As well, Basescu also said that Romania has steadily drawn international community's attention, of the European Union and NATO upon the danger represented by frozen conflicts, and especially the conflict in Transdniestr.
"Romania pleaded for EU and USA involvement, together with OSCE, the Russian Federation and Ukraine in the problems related to the settlement of the situation in the Transdniestr zone. Romania backed the EU decision to get engaged in this problem solving, through the creation and implementation of the EU Mission of monitoring the Moldavian-Ukrainian border, being satisfied with the results this mission obtained in the field.
As well, we appreciated the designation by the EU of a special representative for the Republic of Moldova and the opening of an European Commission Representation to Chisinau. Moreover, we have steadily brought the Republic of Moldova topic on the agenda of the European Council's sessions", Basescu also underlined.
