The Moldovan authorities have overstepped all limits, Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu on Wednesday (April 15), in Brussels, told the extraordinary meeting of the Committee on External Affairs of the European Parliament (AFET), which dealt with the developments in the Republic of Moldova after the April 5 ballot there.

The Romanian chief diplomat added that, nonetheless, Romania would not fuel up the communist rhetoric, did not and would not take any decision that should beget reprisals against the decision of the Moldovan authorities to declare two Romanian diplomats personae non-gratae: Romania's Ambassador in Chisinau Filip Teodorescu and minister councillor of the Romanian Embassy Gabriel Gaborean.

"The Republic of Moldova must continue to be our partner [of the European Union] in South-Eastern Europe. The European Parliament should dispatch a mission to the Republic of Moldova as soon as possible, and I am convinced that it will do so," said Diaconescu, hailing the readiness of the European Commission to dispatch a mission to Chisinau.

The Romanian chief diplomat pointed out that the measures taken by the Moldovan authorities were anti-democratic and urged the European Union to have a uniform reaction.

During the news conference after the AFET extraordinary meeting Diaconescu appreciated that the meeting on Wednesday ended with a satisfactory result for Romania and remarked that the threats to some Romanian citizens came from some high officials of the Republic of Moldova. "We are saying again that the accusations made by the Chisinau authorities are a mere attempt at putting the blame on Romania," said the Romanian chief diplomat.

On the other hand AFET informed that the debate on a resolution referring the situation in the Republic of Moldova would continue next week during the plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg.

AFET chairman Jacek Saryusz-Wolski said that this committee would also examine the proposal on dispatching a mission of the European law-making body that should assess the situation in the Republic of Moldova. He emphasized the fact that the European Parliament could only send a political message to the Chisinau authorities after the recent events that took place there.

In his speech Romanian MEP Ioan Mircea Pascu, of the Party of European Socialists/the Social Democratic Party, AFET vice-president, said again that the measures taken by the Moldovan authorities against the Romanian citizens were unacceptable and these measures aimed at compromising Romania, an EU member state.

In his turn euro-deputy Marian-Jean Marinescu, of the European People's Party-European Democrats/the Liberal Democratic Party, who was on the EP observer mission to the recent elections in the Republic of Moldova, enumerated the numerous irregularities that were found during the April 5 ballot such as "voting with expired identity cards, with a Russian passport issued in 1974" and other such deeds that were not mentioned in the OSCE conclusions connected to the above-mentioned ballot.

Head of the delegation of the National Liberal Party in the EP Renate Weber insisted on the fact that in the Republic of Moldova there were still obvious violations of the human rights by the Moldovan authorities and denounced the inhuman treatments and even the tortures committed against several Moldovan young people.
She added that the EP must have a clear firm stance on condemning these actions as the MEPs represented the EU citizens, who do not tolerate such non-democratic behaviour.
