Severin: European Commission response to Republic of Moldova events weak

16 aprilie 2009

Information in English

The  European Commission's response to the events in the Republic of Moldova was weak for various reasons, among which the unwieldy and bureaucratic manner in which the European Union executive operates and the fact there is no common foreign policy mechanism of the EU, which points to the need to reform the European institutions, head of the Social Democrat (PSD) delegation in the European Parliament Adrian Severin told late on Wednesday.

'If there are Romanians dissatisfied with this response (of the Commission to the situation in the Republic of Moldova – editor's note), I at least hope those Romanians will not say they are not interested in the reform of the European institutions.

We are told we shouldn't speak of the reform of the European institutions in the election campaign, since the Romanians get bored of this and are not interested. But if they didn't like how the European institutions reacted, it means we must speak of the reform of the European institutions, since without it we'll fail to be satisfied on another occasion.

The solutions also depend on the instruments we have available. If we fail to equip ourselves with better institutional instruments or we fail to make those we have perfect, we are going to have the same problems over and over again. In my opinion, what happens now, the same as in the case of the gas crisis in January, is that the European Parliament once again proves to be the most astute, visionary, fast, daring and coherent and it sets the example to the other European institutions.

The European Parliament proves to be a loyal representative of the EU citizens', the Romanian MEP said. With respect to the  extraordinary meeting  of  the  European Parliament's  Committee  on Foreign Affairs  (AFET) that discussed the events in the Republic of Moldova, also attended by Romanian Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu, Severin said the accusations made by the Chisinau authorities  on Romania  are  ridiculous, and 'the  manner  in which Romania  was  treated  (by the Moldovan authorities – editor's note) is seen a problem of the European Union'.

'It is unacceptable that a European Union state or the citizens of a EU member state be treated in such a manner and the EU undoubtedly has not hesitation to take action here. We are not going to declare Moldova war, of course, but there will be a very serious discussion and the Union will take all the measures set in the treaties in order to answer such a challenge.

However, we hope things will not get that far and that the mission from the European Parliament and EU executive institutions we plan to send to the Republic of Moldova will bring things back to normal', Severin said.He hailed the idea of holding an extraordinary AFET meeting and the fact that the Romanian foreign minister was invited to the European Parliament.

'The  European Parliament  (EP) actually proved that we also have  here  political vision, astuteness and solidarity.
We sounded the alarm to the other European institutions and we hope the Presidents' Conference (that gathers the leaders of the political groups in the EP) on Thursday would adopt our proposal to include an analysis of the situation in the Republic of Moldova on the agenda of the plenary session of the EP next week and that the EU Commission and the EU Council would each present then a declaration on their position and intentions', Severin said.
