Romanian Secretary of State for strategic affairs Bogdan Aurescu is going to participate on Tuesday in Madrid in the annual meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, organized by the incumbent Spanish Presidency of the Council, reads a release of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE).

The future presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will be taken over six months from now by Slovenia.
The upcoming session of the Committee of Ministers has a special symbolic signification for it marks also the 60th anniversary since the setting up of the Council of Europe.

In this context, the political statement of this meeting is to focus on evoking the main roles played by the organization during the European integration process and in shaping the main reference points for the activities and actions to be taken in the next interval.

The main topics on the agenda of the formal meeting will thus be the contribution of the Council of Europe to the stability and security of the European continent, the discussion of the decision of the 3rd summit of the organization in Warsaw; the Council of Europe and the conflict in Georgia; the procedure to elect the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the increase in the efficiency of the European Court of Human Rights.

Another important moment will be represented by the debate during the working launch (the informal segment of the meeting),: ‘The State of Democracy in Europe. Belarus.’
