Gas total storage capacity Romgaz and Gazprom will develop jointly could be up to 5-6 billion cubic meters, stated on Monday Romanian Minister of Economy Adriean Videanu in a press conference.
“The storage capacity Romgaz and Gazprom will jointly develop could reach 5-6 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Roman Margineni (Romania’s east) has a capacity in excess of 2 billion cubic meters. For Romgaz and Gazprom the storage in Roman Margineni is part of the potential cooperation between the two sides.
The quantity of 5-6 billion cubic meters of gas is meeting Romania’s needs”, underlined Adriean Videanu.
The cooperation between Romgaz and Gazprom is aimed to bring the gas from Russia closer to Europe and its use in winter time, said Videanu.
“The Romanian-Russian extended cooperation is focused on several storage places in Romania, not the one in Roman Margineni alone”, added Videanu.
The next step in the Romanian-Russian Cooperation is the setting up of a joint commission which will work out the needed documents for the establishment of the Romgaz-Gazprom joint venture.
“Maybe, the joint venture will be established in September. A feasibility study is under way for Roman Margineni storage and we want to also involve Gazprom specialists together with our consultant. A Romgaz-Gazprom cooperation is one which could last for 30 years”, stated the Minister of Economy.
The Romanian side received the signed Memorandum of cooperation with Gazprom and Romania has sent in its turn the signed document to Russia on Monday.
“The preliminary talks with Russia had no political dimension. It was an applied one. Romania invited Russia to the construction of some electricity supply capacities in the country. We have the thermo power stations (CETs) which are non-performing monuments”, Videanu also said.
At the same time, Minister of Economy said that direct contracts can be concluded for the import of Russian gas to Romania.
“Direct contracts between Romgaz and Gazprom can be concluded. The remainder of importers will operate in a normal way”, said Videanu.
Romania and Russia signed the first cooperation agreement after 1989, which stipulates the identification of all cooperation opportunities, the setting up of a joint venture between Romgaz and Gazprom included.
“Romgaz will own 50 percent of the joint venture and Gazprom, 50 percent. The cooperation will consist of storing natural gas and turning it to account by direct sales, as well as of joint investments in co-generation,” said Videanu.
At present, Romania imports gas from the Russian Federation through the Russian-German company Wintershall.
