President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geona, head of the Senate, announced on Tuesday, that he asked in the ruling coalition, for the modification of the Protocol for a Partnership for Romania, in the sense of the elimination of the provision that the head of the upper house of Parliament be also vice-president of the Supreme Council for Romania’s Defence (CSAT).
I asked for the modification of the protocol of the coalition and I hope this can be solved also legally, in the period to come (…)/ I made an official request from PSD-Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L), in Parliament respectively.
“A formal decision of CSAT is necessary, not a memorandum with the Iraqis, but a memorandum of Romanian political decision. Parliament has to be informed that the procedures were not met, said Mircea Geoana, who believes that the Romanian law has to be applied.”

The PSD head announced, on Sunday, his decision to withdraw from the position of vice- president of CSAT, he said he made this decision “forced by the electoral gestures of President Traian Basescu, ” associated with his visits to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mircea Geoana said that for him it is un-acceptable to continue to legitimate, by his presence at CSAT’s meetings, “an institution that has become only decorous during the Basescu regime.”
The PSD leader gave assurances that at the level of the government, the PSD-PD-L coalition will continue to work.
