Wizz Air has become the leading low-cost air transporter according to the number of passengers, “deposing” Blue Air Co., market leader so far, Capital weekly reports.
Blue Air Co. was launched in 2004 by businessman Nelu Iordache, at that time being the first low-cost operator in Romania.
Three years later, Wizz Air, initially launched in Poland, made a first flight in Romania, the market with the fastest growth rate.
If in the first quarter of 2008 Blue Air announced a total of 182,000 passengers compared to 146,000 for Wizz Air, in Q1 2009 the rapport reversed: 313,000 passengers for Wizz Air and 201,000 passengers for Blue Air.
In 2009, each of the two companies is targeting 1.7 million passengers on a 5-million passenger market.
“We have developed by launching new routes, by opening new bases and the allocation of new aircraft.
So that Wizz Air has become leader on the low-cost segment market in Romania in just two years since the inauguration of the first operational base in Bucharest, explained Natasa Kazmer, company PR and Communication Manager.
In full crisis, Wizz Air doubled the transport capacity for Romania, increased the number of staff and allocated two Airbus 320 to the bases in Bucharest and Timisoara (west).
According to Wizz Air CEO, Jozsef Varadui, the company success is based on the ultra low- cost business model, proved as a winner in relation to clients, irrespective if the market crosses a beneficial or a difficult period.
In Romania, Wizz Air accounts for a market share of 35 percent.
