The launch of the Sandero model in 2007 and of the car scrapping program on the European markets in 2009 took Dacia to the top spot in terms growth in the first five months of the year, with 22 percent, which slowed down the decline of the Renault group to 16 percent, compared with 22 percent for the French brand, Ziarul Financiar daily reports on Wednesday.
Given that many of the European carmakers are announcing declines of production or even factory closures, Dacia is the only one to have announced two successive output increases in 2009, of which Sandero accounts for over half.
The increase in production will generate 400 new jobs in the plant. In the first quarter of this year, Dacia accounted for 1 percent of Romania’s GDP and 8 percent of the country’s exports, contributing to the reduction of the trade deficit.
Romania is among the countries in Europe with the most serious declines of the automotive market, given that new car registrations in the first five months of the year fell by almost 58 percent.
The number of new car registrations reached 51,616 cars from January-through May, according to the statistics of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.
However, Dacia ranks first in Europe in terms of increase of the number of new car registrations.
