Ensuring Romania and Turkey’s energy security was the main subject of the talks President Traian Basescu and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey Ahmet Davutoglu had on Thursday evening at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace, the Presidential Administration informed.
In this context, the two officials discussed the implementation of the Nabucco gas pipeline project.
President Traian Basescu welcomed the conclusion of negotiations between the states participating in the project, expressing his belief that the meeting for the signing, this month, of the relevant Intergovernmental Agreement is an important step towards diversifying energy sources and transport routes.
“Given the particular importance both countries attach to the Black Sea region, President Traian Basescu emphasized the benefits of Turkey’s involvement in the new instruments of multilateral cooperation created in this region,’ reads the release of the Presidential Administration.
The Romanian head of state also voiced appreciation for Turkey’s activity within the various Southeast European cooperation bodies, showing that the enhancement of its regional commitment is a prerequisite for progress in the proximity of the European Union.
The two officials also discussed topical issues on the international agenda, such as the situation in Iraq, Iran and the Mideast Peace Process.
The Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmet Davutoglu, is on an official visit to Romania at the invitation of his counterpart Cristian Diaconescu.
