The Romanian held of state told the approx. 1,300 participants in the works at the summer university in Baile Tusnad, organized by the Pro Minoritate Foundation based in Budapest (Hungary) and by the Hungarian Youth Council in Romania, that the most powerful reality of the moment is represented by the economic crisis.
Basescu stated that Romania will find its way out of this crisis, together with the other European states and with the world’s biggest economies.
He also made an appeal to national solidarity, which is a necessity in such times of crisis, and also mentioned that he cannot understand those who are only trying to undermine the national solidarity in such moments.
Traian Basescu was booed at the summer university in Baile Tusnad when he cited from the Article 1 of the Constitution and spoke about he manner in which he understands the concept of autonomy.
When he got into the camp where the works of the university actually take place, several participants showed him pieces of papers on which they had written the word ‘autonomy’. He told them that they were only showing those papers to him for nothing, for no autonomy was to be granted there and then.’
‘We need to modernize our Constitution, the state institutions, we need the increase of autonomy level of all localities in Romania, with one amendment. Equal autonomy for Odorheiul Secuiesc and for Tulcea or Caracal… ,’ he said.
After saying these words, the Romanian head of state was booed again, but he replied: ‘this only shows your capacity of carrying a dialogue,’ and he asked the participants to behave in a more decent manner.
Traian Basescu continued to speak about the concept of autonomy: ‘The communities in Romania, either Romanian Roma or Hungarian communities have the same need of having more freedom in their hands to decide their own future.
I find it out-of-place this ambition for autonomy only for some.
My dear people, you need to understand we all need autonomy, not only you who are showing me now those pieces of paper,’ Traian Basescu said.
‘For all those who dream of an autonomy only to mean passports being needed to travel inside the Romanian territory, I tell you this is a wrong thing to wish for and I will not hesitate to tell you that no Romanian politician will break or negotiate the Romanian Constitution,’ the head of state stressed.
The President cited again from the Article 1 of the Constitution, and he was once again booed, with many participants yelling in Hungarian ‘freedom for the Hungarians’.
The Romanian head of state continued to remind them the provisions within Article 1, according to which ‘Romania is a national state, sovereign and independent, unitary and indivisible,’ also adding that:
‘I hope you have understood what the Article 1 from the Romanian Constitution says and that you will understand in the future the concept of autonomy by having it in mind.’
Traian Basescu participated in Baile Tusnad in a debate at the works of the summer university, focusing on ‘Politicians Who Were carrying Reform in Europe.’
There also delivered speeches the former Hungarian Premier, Viktor Orban, and the Romanian MEP of a Hungarian origin Tokes Laszlo (Romania).
