‘Romania’s relation with Russia is a pragmatic one and there is a special need to boost trust between the two countries.
There have been some diplomatic incidents of late which we do not consider to be specific of the Romanian-Russian relationship and we want a partnership on equal footing with the Russian Federation, not of equality as economic power, or as military power or influence in the world, but we want our relations to be grounded in the respect to the interests of the other.
We are ready to respect the interests of the Russian Federation on condition that our interests are fully respected in exchange,’ said Basescu.
As far as Romania’s relationship with China is concerned, the President said this is excellent at a political level but not as good at an economic level.
‘Romania has a trade deficit in excess of 2 billion euros with China and the problem is not the vigour of the Chinese economy, but Romania’s lack of interest in narrowing the balance of payment deficit with China,’ said Basescu.
