The president, who made the remarks at the debates staged by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Targu Mures (northwest of Bucharest), stressed that ‘If the citizens want this, Romania certainly makes progress.
Depending on the effort and intelligence of each of us, we can modernise the country, we can re-gain the lost time. It is up to the capacity of the society and the politicians to promote and back the required reforms so that we may forget that Romania hasn’t always been a member of the European Union.
Of course, I am speaking of a reasonable time horizon. I am confident Romania becomes the place where everyone’s vision of the future and everyone’s hopes can become reality’.
Basescu said that some people too often fail to understand how much power the voters have and he gave the example of the referendum for a single-voting system that Romania held in 2007.
‘The sociological research was showing that 80 percent of the Romanians wanted a single- voting system. When the referendum was organised, just 29 percent of the Romanians turned out to vote for such a goal. Now, the Romanians most likely want a reform of the political class…
They will have the chance to voice an opinion on the occasion of the referendum. If there is the same absenteeism, although it is clear the Romanians want the number of parliamentarians to be cut, I’m afraid this could also affect the politicians’ confidence, as they believe in the people’s power, with such confidence being linked to the manner in which the Romanians relate to their power’, President Basescu stressed.
