Information in English

The Standing Bureaus of the Deputies’ Chamber and the Senate will meet in a joint sitting, at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
The meeting takes place after Chamber Speaker Roberta Anastase and the parliamentary group of the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L – in the ruling coalition) asked the Romanian Parliament’s Standing Bureaus to meet and discuss President Traian Basescu’s request for the organization of a referendum on a one-chamber parliament.

‘It is a move in line with the regulations which I also join. It is a natural step in the present context. And I say it because the Parliament must take stance on such an important topic. The move is also aimed at the parliament and it must take an official stance on it.

I think we should not use bureaucratic proceedings to block such a move, and this is the reason why we ask the joint Standing Bureau of the two chambers to meet at 1 p.m., on Wednesday,’ Anastase said early this week.
The speaker stressed the meeting of the Bureaus had been planned to be held right on Monday, but Senate President Mircea Geoana postponed it.

President Traian Basescu asked, on Sept. 23, for the assent of the Speakers of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies that a referendum be held on Nov. 22, on the day of the presidential elections, when the Romanians would be asked about setting up an unicameral parliament to number 300 members at the most.
