State secretary Bogdan Aurescu pays visit to Georgia

State Secretary for Strategic Affairs Bogdan Aurescu will be in Georgia, Oct 1-3, to mark a year of activity of the civil Mission of the European Union, for the Monitoring in Georgia (EUMM Georgia) as well as for Romanian participation in it, said the Romanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, MAE.

Aurescu will have bilateral consultations on security issues at the Georgian Foreign Ministry, and will hold a conference in the ‘Romania’ Amphitheater of the State University in Tbilisi, to whose modernization Romania has contributed with assistance funds for development in the year 2008.

State secretary Bogdan Aurescu will have a meeting with deputy head of the EUMM Georgia Mission, general Gilles Janvier, as well as with the members of the Romanian contingent of the mission.

This is the first visit of a Romanian official to Georgia since the start of the activity of the EUMM mission, on Oct 1, 2008.

Romania has been one of the first states that have contributed with human and logistic resources in the EUMM Georgia mission. Romania has participated in the mission with a team of 20 monitors, six of which carry out their activity in the Central Command, eight do act in the Regional Office of Gori, five in the Regional Office of Mtskheta and one monitor in the regional office of Mtskheta and one monitor in the Regional Office of Zugdidi.

‘Romania has taken concrete action for ensuring an area of stability and security in the extended region of the Black Sea since the start of the launch of EUMM Georgia and has been actively involved in the EU efforts of stabilization and normalization of the situation.
The fact that we keep the same number of monitors since the start of the mission proves that our commitment is constant, it also proves the professional quality of the experts sent on mission,’ said for the press state secretary Bogdan Aurescu.

Since the start of the EUMM Georgia mission, the Romanian representatives in many patrolling missions along with colleagues from other states of the EU, acting with professionalism with a view to making the situation in the field less tense, to normalizing it, according to the mandate trusted.

In addition, by its assistance programmes for development, Romania has initiated and applied numerous projects of assistance for Georgia, at various levels. Also, the contribution of Romania to the UNHCR programme, the programme for refuges and for displaced people respectively, in Georgia, amounted, in the period 2007-2009, to some 550,000 euros.

To these sums the contribution of Romania for humanitarian aid in Georgia has been added, after the conflict in Aug 2008, materialized in the allotment of 150,000 euros from the Official Development Assistance (ODA) budget, and of 1.3 million euros from the reserve fund of the Government.

As part of the conference of Romania Amphitheater of the State University of Tbilisi, in front of the Georgian Students, state secretary Bogdan Aurescu will hold a lecture on NATO’s new strategic concept – a Romanian perspective.’

Also, the state secretary for strategic affairs will have bilateral talks at the Foreign Ministry, with Giga Bokeria, the first deputy minister for Foreign Affairs. The agenda of the talks includes the stage and the prospects of Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia as well as the situation of security in the region and the role of EUMM Georgia a year after the operationalization of the mission.

Launched in the context of the burst out, on Aug 6, 2008, of the Russian Georgian conflict, with EUMM Georgia having demonstrated, on the one hand, the special interest which the EU grants to its neighbourliness, and on the other hand, its capacity to act as an active and credible player, in the management of the international problems, the MAE said.

The civil mission of EU of monitoring in Georgia was launched on Sept 15, 2008, on the occasion of the meeting of the General Affairs and External Relations Council, GAERC The mission started its activity on Oct 1, 2008. Subsequently, on July 27, 2009, during the the GAERC mission, decided has been the prolongation of the mandate of the mission by one year, until Sept 14, 2010.
