Currently, the Republic of Moldova has no prospects to join the EU, said, in Bucharest, European commissioner for multilingualism Leonard Orban, who does not rule, nevertheless, this prospect, for the future.

Orban is paying a two-day visit to Romania. After debates on Thursday, organized by the Group for Social Dialogue, the European commissioner met, on Friday, with the students and teachers from the Academy of Economic Studies of Bucharest, where he held a conference on “The European Union 2010+, Dilemmas and Challenges.”

In answer to a question about the Republic of Moldova, Leonard Orban answered that, in Brussels, a new file is being prepared, about the countries with European prospects.

Among them, the commissioner mentioned Croatia, in an advanced stage now, and which on Friday resumed the EU accession negotiations, after the lifting of the veto imposed by Slovenia about the drawing of the border between the two countries. Another example was that of Turkey, in a process of negotiation now, as well as other states in various stages of the process, Iceland included, the newest candidate to accession.

“The Republic of Moldova is not included in this group of countries. Currently, the Republic of Moldova has no prospects of EU accession,” said Orban.
The inclusion of Chisinau in the neighbourliness policy of the European Union and in the “Eastern Partnership” is aimed at the EU getting close, not entering the EU,” Orban explained.

He added that the visit of the Moldovan prime minister to Brussels clearly shows what direction the changes made in Chisinau took. “Certainly, these changes create the premises of an acceleration of the process of the Republic of Moldova getting close to the EU.

But IT DOES NOT CHANGE, and I put that in capital letters, the process of accession or not to the EU. This is the decision now. It is difficult to anticipate what will be in ten years, ” Orban also said.
