President Traian Basescu on Saturday, October 3, announced his candidacy for a second term of Romania”s presidency in Sannicolau Mare (Timis county, western Romania). On a visit to Timis county the Romanian president was welcomed in Sannicolau Mare by an enthusiastic group who chanted “Basescu, president!” and as an answer, he announced the intention to run for president.

During his visit to Timis county, citizens with whom he met asked him to candidate for a new term. Traian Basescu explained a few weeks ago that the reason of his frequent visits nationwide is that of being amid people in order to figure out whether he might candidate for the second time.

One of the reasons for which I visit other counties is to figure out whether I could candidate on more time. For the time being, I have no certainty“, said Traian Basescu on September 16. Basescu said at that time that Romania didn”t face the economic slippage to which he referred a few months ago, when he said that if such a situation would come up he gave up a new candidacy.

Traian Basescu resumed the idea on Saturday in Timisoara where he said he estimated an economic rise in Romania starting Q2, next year.

Elected deputy of Vaslui (east) representing the Democrat Party, on September 27, 1992, re-elected in the same position following the elections of November 3, 1996, he resigned on March 9, 1996. Following the runoff of the local elections in 2000 he became Bucharest”s general mayor on June 18 with 50.69% of votes.
