Social Democratic MEP Daciana Sarbu, a member of the environment committee of the European Parliament, sent, on Monday, an open letter to the caretaker environment minister Elena Udrea, minister of Tourism, by which she wants to draw attention on the need to have a dialogue with the specialists on the project of Rosia Montana, in order to take into account a governmental strategy of development of the tourism in this region.
“The people with expertise in the field surely have more, better documented and more concrete ideas in this respect. Please, Ms. minister, accept the dialogue with them and take into account the proposal, as urgently as possible, for a governmental strategy of development of tourism at Rosia Montana. I, for one, I oppose any development project which is not built carefully and with respect for the environment. I consider, at the same time, that it is my duty to propose another solution. Tourism is a solution for Rosia Montana, as we are talking about an area which is historically, culturally and naturally rich” Daciana Sarbu mentioned in the open letter.
The PSD MEP reminded that she participated, along with the environment NGOs in Romania, in very many debates, talks, travels to the site and seminars, that mainly focused on solutions for Rosia Montana. “I, for one, I believe that the mining exploitation based on cyanides cannot be one of these solutions, neither for people, nor for the community, neither for the environment, nor for the cultural and historical patrimony of this region.
At the same time, I believe that the Romanian state has to create an alternative. And a way to development surely is tourism. At the same time, I believe that the Romanian state has to create an alternative. And a way to development surely is tourism.
The fact that you are currently dealing also with the environment policy of Romania can help you have a complete view of the region of Rosia Montana. (…) There would be jobs in the region, additional investment would be drawn, that would support both the families and the local authorities, coming to achieve the transition from an area without hope towards a prosperous one, turning to good account its resources in a long-lasting way and which is guaranteeing the success of the future generations,” said Daciana Sarbu.
She mentioned that, among the proposals advanced until now by the relevant NGOs, there are many interesting ideas, among them the building of a museum of mining, after the British model – where the underground galleries of the oldest exploitations are open to the public, or the building of an archeological park, after a Spanish model – Segobriga, where a poor settlement Segobriga, was revitalized through tourist activities dedicated to the Roman vestiges.

Main issue here is mining exploitation based on cyanides. It is iportant to understand that cyanides are dangerouses only if there is an accident. Otherwise …I wish that people like Daciana Sarbu (they decide for us)to find real problems to fight for.
