The meeting of the Parliament’s Joint Standing Bureaus that should have discussed President Traian Basescu’s letter relating to holding a referendum, was suspended due to lack of quorum, Deputies’ Chamber Speaker Roberta Anastase announced on Monday.
She said the representatives of the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL) failed to attend the meeting and they explained their second absence from such a gathering by the fact that the joint sitting had not been called by both speakers of Parliament.
Therefore, Anastase announced that the ruling Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) will propose to call a new meeting of the Joint Standing Bureaus on Wednesday, Oct. 7; she called on Senate Chairman Mircea Geoana to ‘stop electioneering’ and approve to convene the meeting.
The Joint Standing Bureaus should have discussed Basescu’s letter related to holding a referendum on turning the Romanian Parliament into a one-chamber body with 300 MPs. A similar meeting called last week had to be suspended over poor attendance.
On Sept. 23, President Basescu asked for the assent of the Senate and Deputies’ Chamber speakers to hold the referendum on Nov. 22, when the presidential elections are also scheduled.
