Executive Chairman of the opposition Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor on Monday officially joined the presidential election race. The bid was launched in the western city of Arad in the opening of a show called “Pages from the History of the Nation”, staged at the local Ioan Slavici Theatre to mark the 160th anniversary of the execution of 13 generals that led the 1948-1849 Hungarian Revolution.
Kelemen, endorsed by the UDMR, presented his political programme. “People can choose in 2009 between past and future, and all those who want to walk into the future, instead of into the past, can elect a man who has nothing to do with the past, a young, dynamic man who is involved in all that means Romania’s future”, said Kelemen. He added that he is a candidate who can change something in Romania for the better.
“I am expecting to win the votes of Romanian, Hungarians and Romas, of all the citizens who are demanding more from the Government and the society”, said Kelemen. Among the public officials attending the launch of the bid for presidency of Kelmen Hunor were Hungary’s ambassador in Bucharest Oszkar Fuzes and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Kalocsa, Hungary.
