For food products, beverages and tobacco, Romanians spend half of their revenues, almost three times more than the citizens of other European states, Romania libera daily reports. This figure however, indicates Romanians’ small salaries, highly affected by the economic crisis. 71.6% of their money is spent on consumables, 16.7% on taxes, 6.9% on production and 1.5% on investment.
Food products and beverages cover 48.9% of the monthly expenditure and only 4.4% for culture and leisure activities, the national statistics Institute announced. Only 4.5% of the revenues is spent on health-related services, mainly due to the public health insurance.
“Poverty and low revenues influence the structure of expenditure (…). All other countries spend only 15-18% on food. While Romanians spend 4.4% on leisure activities, the other EU citizens spend 10-15% and sometimes 20% on such activities,” said Petre Pandea, vice president of the Cartel Alfa trade union confederation.
In terms of services(a life standard indicator), the gap is also significant: Romanians spend 3.7%, way below the European level of 30%-40%. Between April and June, Romanians allotted 18.7% of their money on house maintenance, of which 14.3% monthly fees (water, energy, natural gas).
