The Romanian top diplomat pointed out Romania”s outstanding progress in the process of assuming the historical knowledge and honoring the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
He stressed that all the steps Romania took regarding the Holocaust contributed to fighting against intolerance in Romania, nurturing mutual respect and educating people, the young generation above all, in the spirit of the genuine values. “Combating the xenophobic and the anti-Semite attitudes represents a real moral duty in a democratic society, and it is incumbent to both the political and the opinion leaders from among the civil society, the public speech, the public statements against the discrimination and intolerance actions, represent exactly the instrument required to create an environment banning the exclusion of a group or a people category.
Public persons must be an example in the respect and slam, without delay, any infringement of the moral laws of a democratic society,” ForMin Predoiu stressed on the occasion.
Rabbi Baker praised the efforts by the Romanian authorities and appreciated the stances they constantly took on combating and condemning the Anti Semite and Xenophobic manifestations and attitudes in the Romanian media and public life.
They have also emphasized the positive changes at the level of the Parliament and the public institutions that brought about the acceleration of the process for the return of the property that used to belong to the Jewish community in Romania.
Since 2004, Romania”s Government has established October 9 to be the Holocaust Remembrance Day in Romania. The Holocaust Remembrance Day in Romania commemorates the beginning of the deportation to Transdniestre of the Jews from Romania”s territory, in 1941, following the plan of the Nazi Germany and its Allies to persecute and exterminate the Jews.
