Loading ...The worrying drop of the Danube River waters, that reached 3,000 cubic meters a second in Turnu Severin (southwestern Romania), has prompted a sort of ‘state of emergency”, director of the Danube Maritime Ports Administration based in the eastern Galati port city said on Thursday.
“The waters have dropped quite a lot, the flow at Turnu Severin has fallen below 3,000 cubic meters a second, and this has become a sort of state of emergency on the Danube at this moment. We have warned all the navigators, the port and river operators.
All navigators should be very careful, while the ports have difficulties – due to the pronounced drop of the Danube waters – in providing the adequate conduct of the goods traffic”, Mihai Ochialbescu said. He pointed out that the Danube waters near the docks should have been two and a half meters deep at this time of the year, but instead they are just one meter deep.
“We did not expect such sudden falls in the water levels and, at this moment, we are looking for solutions to act at a lower level than the one designed at the docks”, the director stressed.
“The spending is rather high, but we are forced to ensure the required depths at the docks so that the operation of the goods traffic should not suffer, even in such difficult circumstances when the Danube waters have dropped so much”, Ochialbescu said.
