Senate Speaker Mircea Geoana met, on Wednesday, with President of Poland Lech Kaczynski, on an official visit to Romania now. Geoana saluted the visit of the Polish president to Romania, as well as the signing of the strategic Partnership, in a crossroads period for the Romanian policy, stressing the values Romania and Poland share as regards the Trans-Atlantic ideas as well as the trust in the future of NATO’s structures and the EU, informed the press office of the Senate.
The Senate speaker presented the major interests of Romania from a strategic point of view, among them there are total ensuring of the national and regional security, the non-abandonment of the countries in the East in the sphere of influence exclusively Russian, as well as the fundamental interest in the entry of the Republic of Moldova in the European Union,” said the source.
For his part, Lech Kaczynski voiced interest in the experience of the president of the Senate of Romania Mircea Geoana, in the cooperation with the Trans-Atlantic structures and the US. “I am interested in your position in the current context of our area as regards the speech of Barack Obama who announced a new geography of the world. I am also interested in what position you recommend our countries to adopt on the occasion of the visit to the area of US Vice-President Joe Biden,” said the Polish president.
Geoana spoke up for quitting the East-West logic, showing that the relations with the great powers have to be adjusted to the interests of the region. “I am convinced that a power such as the US will not renounce the idea of involvement in the area of Central and Eastern Europe, America will not let his allies “unprotected, ” Geoana added. At the end of the talks Mircea Geoana considered as necessary the modification of the “null sum game” with Russia, opting for a partnership marked by normality with the great power in the East.
The meeting of the two officials also included a short talk about the past and the common negative experiences Romania and Poland had during the communist rule. The Polish president referred to the building of Parliament, which he called an imposing building which is “part of the city” and has to be respected as such.
