The fact that Romanian-born German writer Herta Muller won the Nobel Prize for Literature represented a huge surprise for many Romanians, but also raised a feeling of deep satisfaction, Romanian Academician Razvan Theodorescu, former Minister of Culture, stated on Thursday.
“A German language writer, but who was born and raised in Romania and who reflected in his writing upon the realities of this country is now being offered the most important award there is in the field of Literature. What Lucian Blaga and Marin Sorescu were by little not able to obtain, is now offered to a representative of the multiculturalism of this land,” Razvan Theodorescu said.
He also added that Romanians should understand better now that the Germany minority they have been living with for centuries represents “a very precious element of our civilization.” “I said it before, while I was Minister of Culture, years ago, when I was trying to obtain for Sibiu (central Romania city) the title of European Cultural Capital.
And I have to say it again that the title was obtained in the end also due to the very important role played by the German culture in Romania. After Sibiu – European Cultural Capital in 2007, here comes the Nobel for a Romanian-German writer, which shows once more how important is the Romanians to understand these values of the multiculturalism, Razvan Theodorescu underlined.
