Communist dissenter Doina Cornea was bestowed by former Romanian King Mihai I on Thursday the Romanian Royal House Cross and she was awarded the Legion of Honour by France”s Ambassador Henri Paul on Friday. “His Majesty said in a letter that the Royal House Cross was awarded me for having promoted a spirit of freedom and dignity, then for my crucial activity in the moments following the (Dec. 1989) Revolution in re-establishing the institutions of the state of law and thirdly for having backed the Romanian Royal House values publicly, not by mere whispered words. All this is true and I am glad the king includes everything on this paper”, Cornea told.
The Communist dissenter said France”s Ambassador to Romania Henri Paul would present her the Legion of Honour on Friday, in the rank of Commander. Cornea, 80, made the remarks at home, where she is still recovering after a stroke suffered last year.
She was jailed by the Communist rulers before 1989 for having distributed anti-Communist leaflets. She also broadcast several protests on Radio Free Europe; after the 1989 fall of Communism, Cornea joined the Christian Democratic National Peasant Party (PNTCD).
