“Rumania in fabula” is the concept supported this year by the stand devoted to Romanian prose at the Liber International Book Fair in the Spanish capital city, at which the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) is present with more than 250 original and translated books issued by Romanian publishing houses.
Publishers, translators and common people visited Romania’s stand at the Liber Fair and took special interest both in the titles written by Romanian authors published in Spanish and the programmes of support, translation financing and publication offered by ICR. By means of these programmes, Translation and Publication Support Programme, 20 Authors and Publishing Romania, one can cover the entire translation and part of the production costs or only part of the publication costs.
“Romania in general starts being increasingly present in all the fields in Spain and increasingly visible so that the ICR stand at Liber was visited, with much interest too, by professionals, publishers, translators … as year in, year out ever more numerous Romanian books translated and published in Spain appear.
This is why the interest in this respect is more obvious,” says Cristian Gavrila, ICR attache for marketing and promotion in Madrid. The value of Romanian literature, the fact that in Spain they publish in general more translations and that the publishers are accustomed to getting subsidies for translation and publication made it possible that, in this country, the most numerous Romanian books should be translated by means of the above-mentioned programmes: 17 books since the beginning of these programmes in 2006 and another 10 titles to be published by the end of this year.
This 26th Liber International Book Fair, which is attended by about 700 publishing houses and relevant institutions from 20 countries and about 12,000 professionals, is the most important event of the publishing market in Spain. Organized one year in Madrid and the other one in Barcelona, Liber is one of the main venues for the professionals in the field: publishers, librarians, distributors or book sellers. I
n 2011 Romania will be the guest of honour of the Liber International Book Fair, reads a press release issued by ICR.
