Transport Minister Radu Berceanu of the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L) told a television show on Sunday that he would prefer a government with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), fresh in the Opposition, arguing that PD-L and PSD could make peace after the presidential electiom. Asked which party he would like to join PD-L in the Cabinet – PSD or the National Liberal Party (PNL) – Berceanu said, “I personally prefer PSD.”
“Currently there are actually three political parties -PD-L, PSD and PNL – and a political formation – the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR). Any government, at least for as long as the incumbent Parliament, which composition is the result of the Romanians” vote last year, lasts will be a combination of these four elements. There is no alternative. Willy-nilly, the composition of Parliament compels us to think that any version can be eventually considered after December,” said Berceanu.
He added that if the incumbent government falls as a result of the motion of censure against it to be discussed Tuesday, the President will be under a constitutional obligation to start consultations with the political parties for a new cabinet. “The President may negotiate a government that will see things through until after the election, but he also may negotiate a formula for a longer term,” Berceanu said.
He said that he does not believe President Basescu is the man who would delay things by prolonging talks and procedures until the presidential election is over. “I think the President will try to discuss with the parties an as solid and as stable formula as possible and does so as soon as possible,” he said.
