On an electioneering tour to the central county of Bistrita on Sunday, chief of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana voiced wish that a new parliamentary majority will emerge next week when a motion of censure against the incumbent Government is voted on in Parliament.

He also said that the new majority should lead to the establishment of a government of specialists. “I hope next week PSD will provide Romania with the chance of establishing a government of good specialists that will start sketching up a new economic policy that will be dramatically different from the disastrous policy of the Boc-Pogea-Videanu Cabinet, under transparent conditions and with the elimination of any doubts over election rigging. I hope to be able to notice with the motion of censure a new majority in Romania”s Parliament. According to the golden rule of democracy, that majority will have to come up with proposals for a new government.

We are of the opinion that in the two months to the presidential runoff we will need a government of good specialists that will enable the management of the country”s affairs and current issues, that will be able to work out with the new parliamentary majority a draft Budget for 2010. I hope we will be able to bring in specialists who will provide Romania with a multi-annual budget for the first time, so that the economic recovery plans may gain in predictability and consistency,” said Geoana.

He mentioned that the first negotiations to this end will be with the opposition National Liberal Party (PNL), pointing to President Traian Basescu”s statement when the first Boc Cabinet was assembled that in order to function properly a government needs a comfortable parliamentary majority. At the same time, Geoana criticised what he said was a brutal manner in which the PSD directors of self-financing decentralised public services were replaced over the past days.

“This is proof to a very cynical and brutal manner in which the current regime prepared the start of the political crisis. It is absolutely impossible for someone who is affected by the collapse of the ruling coalition to find in some hours hundreds and thousands of people to brutally appoint them to offices in the public local and central administrations. I do not mean to say that the PSD officers were innocent, but it is obvious now that a clique of people has been deliberately installed in office with the only purpose of embezzling funds for the presidential campaign and rig the election,” argued Geoana.
