The number of the European bisons in the reserve at Vama Buzaului, a place 40 km away from the city of Brasov (central Romania), will increase by six.
The six adult animals will reach Vama Buzaului on Thursday. They were bought from a zoo in France by the Brasov County Council. Mayor of Vama Buzaului Tiberiu Chirilas told Agerpres that, in the reserve, there would be 11 adult European bisons and a baby, who has been born this year.
Another baby European bison will be born in mid-November. The Valea Zimbrilor reserve covers a 12 ha area, but it will be enlarged by another 80 ha of woods. Three men to take care of them and a manager ensure the care of the animals and the management of the reserve.
According to the mayor, a few thousand tourists have visited the reserve this year. “There were days this summer when we even had 500 visitors a day. The admission to the reserve is free and we want the Vama Buzalului area, a very beautiful, but little visited region, to join the tourist circuit of the county and we want to draw as many tourists as possible,” said the mayor.
The Valea Zimbrilor reserve was opened in late 2007 and the first European bisons were brought from Italy, Austria and Switzerland. It is the fourth European bison reserve in Romania after the ones in the Counties of Hunedoara (central Romania), Neamt (eastern Romania) and Dambovita (southern Romania).
