The Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) organizes the preparatory meeting of the Circle of Presidents of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts, at the Parliament’s Palace, in Bucharest on Thursday and Friday.
President Traian Basescu is also attending the opening ceremony of the event, on Thursday morning. According to the Conference’s statute, during the preparatory meeting decision will be made on the date of the next Congress, due to take place in Bucharest The event is staged by the CCR given that in June 2008 Romania was designated to take over the chairmanship of the Conference of the European Constitutional Courts, for three years, namely over 2008-2011.
The Conference numbers 33 constitutional courts from all over the world, and CCR joined the body as a full member in 1994. According to the statute, the Romanian Constitutional Court organizes in Bucharest, both the preparatory meeting of the Circle of the Presidents of Conference of European Constitutional Courts, and its 15th Congress, due in 2011.
Also in June 2008, CCR president Ioan Vida was appointed the rapporteur on behalf the regional European network, at the first world Conference on Constitutional law, that the Constitutional Court of South Africa in cooperation with the Commission on Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) organized in Cape Town, on Jan 23-24, this year.
The last (the 14th) Congress of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts took place in Vilnius, on June 2-7, 2008. The decision on organizing the Congress in Vilnius was made by the body’s member states, during the preparatory meeting of the Circle of Presidents, in Sept 2006.
