Romania’s Constitutional Court (CCR) was sometimes disapproved, but it has been always faithful to Romania’s fundamental law, stated President Traian Basescu, present on Thursday, in the opening session of the Preparatory meeting of the Circle of Presidents of the Conference of European Constitutional Courts.
“Due to its nature, as a judicial political instance, Romania’s Constitutional Court was sometimes disapproved by some of the political life players or civil society, but it always proved faithfulness towards Romania’s fundamental law and even acted as its defender.
The mission you entrusted CCR with, namely to represent the European Regional Group to the international events organized with the participation of the constitutional courts from all over the world, proves this institution’s maturity and its recognition at international level”, stated President Basescu, addressing to the participants in this event.
In his turn, CCR President Ioan Vida stressed that sometimes there is hostility on the part of the public opinion, especially when certain law articles are declared unconstitutional.
“Certainly, we are aware that many times we face a certain hostility on the part of the public opinion, of the press, especially when we have to confront the Government, the Parliament and when we are forced to declare certain articles unconstitutional.
Although this usually happens till the Constitutional Court’s decision is published by the Official Gazette”, said Vida. He pointed out that after the arguments brought by the CCR are understood criticism ceases.
“I suppose this is also valid in your countries as well, because this is the way the constitutional jurisdiction is perceived. Many times it is viewed as barring political interests, many times as a barrier for some group’s interest or for some other interests”, CCR President also said. Ioan Vida thanked President Basescu for his welcome message addressed to the participants in the meeting and for his judicial comments.
