“Politically speaking, we must have a national pledge if we want a substantial portfolio [for the European commissioner]. If there are doubts about the President, we must think of the variant given to the European Commission,” said the former Foreign Minister.
Cristian Diaconescu added that, during the latest government meeting, he had warned against the vulnerability Romania may be subject to if the government breaks. “All the members of the government have been warned against the difficult situation they may place Romania in. It is necessary that, by a political consensus nationwide, we should have several variants for the position of European commissioner, persons that should be supported politically from within.
The more important this support is, to a larger extent the European Parliament will consider such a suggestion,” said Daiconescu. He thinks that Romania should suggest, by a political consensus, two or three candidates that should be able to work on a serious portfolio of a European commissioner.
President Traian Basescu said on Sunday that Romania’s chances of getting the position of European commissioner were slimmer as there was no foreign minister. “We still have some chances but, as there is no foreign minister, we have minimized the chances ourselves. However, we should have a policy of alliances,” said the Head of State during the visit he paid to Romania’s Tourism Fair and the International Agriculture Fair Indagra Farm.
Last month the Boc Government nominated Dacian Ciolos as Romania’s candidate for the position of European Commissioner for Agriculture, but, in the meantime, this cabinet fell following the vote of no confidence on October 13 and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now headed by an interim minister.
