CSOP: Traian Basescu results top of vote intentions for presidential elections

Romanian President Traian Basescu would get 35 percent of the votes of Romanians in the first round of the presidential election and more than 50 percent in the second round, according to an opinion poll conducted by the CSOP, ordered by the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L).

According to the poll, Traian Basescu will rank 1st after the first round of the elections, with 35 percent of the votes, followed by the leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Mircea Geoana, 24 percent, the leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Crin Antonescu, 19 percent, and the independent candidate Sorin Oprescu, 8 percent.

Following the top 4 after the first round would be George Becali (the New Generation Party – PNG-CD), with 5 percent of the total votes of the Romanians, Corne liu Vadim Tudor (Greater Romania Party – PRM) and Kelemen Hunor (the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania – UDMR), each with 4 percent, and other candidates, 1 percent.

The opinion poll gave as winner after the second round of the elections Traian Basescu, with more than 50 percent of the votes of the Romanians to be on his name.
If Traian Basescu meets in the second round of the presidential elections Mircea Geoana, the incumbent head of state will cumulate 52 percent of the total votes of the Romanians, while if he meets Crin Antonescu, the PNL leader, he will get 48 percent.

If Traian Basescu meets in the second round of the presidential elections the independent candidate Sorin Oprescu, he would win 53 percent of the total votes of the Romanians, while the incumbent Bucharest City Mayor will get 47.

According to the CSOP research, in the case there will be organized parliamentary elections in the next interval, PD-L will get 34 percent of the votes of the Romanians, the PSD+PC (social Democratic Party and the Conservative Party political alliance) will get 32 percent, the PNL will get 20 percent, UDMR, PRM, PNG-CD will each get 4 percent and other parties 2 percent.
The CSOP poll was conducted over October 16-18, on a national representative sample of 852 people, with an error margin existing of plus/minus 3.4 percent and with a probability of 0.95.
