“We reaffirm our cohesion and backing for Mr. Klaus Johannis for the PM office and we request President Traian Basescu to withdraw his PM designation in the person of Mr. Croitoru because today, at the end of this meeting, it is obvious he has no majority. I asked Mr. Croitoru, with all due respect for such a professional, to abstain entering a game beyond his powers.
This is a political game and he tries to play Mr. Basescu’s cards, and this risks to affect his professional reputation and an eventual future career. That is why I believe that the only honorable move Mr. Croitoru can do is to lay down his mandate and recognize that, after this meeting, he failed to gather a majority in his favor, so that political consultations should be re-launched with the president and we can return to normality”, underlined Geoana.
According to the PSD leader, the format of Tuesday talks – Croitoru’s meeting with all party leaders forming the parliamentary majority – helped the PM designate to avoid a “disturbing” situation.
“I think that this joint meeting also exonerated Mr. Croitoru from a disturbing situation, taken in four or five different portions. In a way I think we shortened his suffering and we did it in one take – truly, a relative short one – by giving him an anticipated answer”, said Mircea Geoana.
The social democrat President also said he recommended Lucian Croitoru not to get involved into such a “political charade”. “Mr. Croitoru presented Romania’s difficult economic and financial situation.
Representatives of the political formations, part of this transparent majority in Romania’s Parliament, had an unanimous standpoint, namely that Mr. Croitoru failed to get the majority he needs in Romania’s Parliament (…) Each passing day, when this crisis is not solved based on the democracy gold rule – the majority has the right to name a Prime Minister – does nothing but deepens the crisis, endangers jobs and affects Romania’s international reputation”, said Geoana.
