The results of the survey released on Tuesday also show 20 percent of the Romanians would vote for National Liberal leader Crin Antonescu.
Next placed are Bucharest Mayor Sorin Oprescu, who runs as an independent and Greater Romania Party (PRM) leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor, who would each get 7 percent of the votes, followed by Hungarian Democratic Union (UDMR) candidate Kelemen Hunor with 4 percent and New Generation Party (PNG) president George Becali with 3 percent.
Should Basescu get to the runoff, he would be defeated by Antonescu, Geoana or Oprescu.
If running against the Liberal leader, Basescu would get 47 percent and Antonescu 53 percent; if running against Geoana, the incumbent president would get 46 percent in the second round of voting and the PSD leader 54 percent, the survey reveals.
Nevertheless, 33 percent of respondents believe Basescu will win the election, 19 percent believe it will be Geaona, 9 percent believe it will be Antonescu, 4 percent Oprescu and 1 percent Becali, the survey shows.
Should general elections be held next Sunday, the Alliance of PSD+PC would get 33 percent of the votes, the Democratic Liberals 32 percent, PNL 20 percent, PRM 7 percent, UDMR 6 percent and PNG 2 percent. The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,200 people and it has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percent.
