President of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Crin Antonescu stated on Thursday that the Vice President of the United States of America, Joseph B iden, expressed the USA equidistance towards all Romania presidency candidates.

The American official and PNL leader had a meeting at the residence of the US Ambassador to Bucharest, on the occasion of the official visit paid by VP Biden to Romania. Crin Antonescu said that the meeting was a “very interesting one, with a very interesting and charming man”, with whom he could discuss “a few of the White House Administration concerns”, as well as PNL concerns “in the prospect of the presidential elections and mainly in the prospect of what is going to follow”.

“I reaffirmed our attachment to the fundamentals of the Romanian foreign policy, to our commitments as allies. The American Vice President reaffirmed USA preoccupation to see the democracy values maintained in this region, and further developed, so that we will have a fair, transparent electoral process. He expressed once again his public stand – the American Administration’s equidistance towards all the presidential candidates”, underlined Crin Antonescu at the end of the meeting.

According to the liberal leader, in his talks with Joseph Biden a series of topics were approached, such as NATO interests in this zone, relations with the Russian Federation, as well as the energy security.

“We did not discuss in detail the missile shield system. It is a topic approached from a wider prospect by the American Vice President and by the entire Administration. I underlined how much we appreciate the principle expressed today, as well, by the American Vice President – Nothing about you without you – but we did not enter the technical details, only the position of principle, both ours and the Americans, for the expansion of a security system based on the principle of the Alliance’s indivisible security and on all the other interests Romania has deriving from its geo-strategic position (…)”, said Antonescu.

In principle, PNL leader said he expressed all his accord for the deployment of some missile defence system components on Romania’s territory.
“There is a rich array of bilateral topics (…) We discussed about a very important standpoint for me and my presidential programme, namely the development, enrichment, and refreshing the Strategic Partnership content with the USA in the economic, technological, educational and cultural fields (…)

We also spoke about history, about the past and the future”, Crin Antonescu also said. Alongside Antonescu the meeting with Joseph Biden was also attended by PNL senator Teodor Melescanu, Chairman of the Defence Committee in the Senate and former ForMin.
