The chief of the Base Before Operation’s press office Lt. Col. Daniel Herrigstad welcomed the journalists and told them that after almost two years of assiduous work, with the help from over 1,200 construction workers, more than half of them from the Romanian companies, and an investment worth about 48 million USD, granted by the U.S. Government, the former 34th Mechanized Base became one of the most modern military bases designed and equipped according to the U.S. military standards.
The base you are visiting will get operational in the coming spring when the first soldiers will be accommodated here. It is a Romanian base, fully upgraded on US funds, and it will be jointly used by the Romanian and the US military, the facilities being initially designed for about 1,700 military of the land troops, the air and navy forces, Herrigstad said.
The permanent base at Kogalniceanu currently avails of administration buildings, bedrooms for one, two or six people, a canteen for 2,500 persons, a sports hall, soccer and baseball playgrounds, a cinema hall, a club and a chapel.
