The former President believes that the Croitoru proposed ruling line-up has no parliamentary backing and is just an “intrigue of Traian Basescu, who schemed this right from the beginning, in various misinterpretation of the Constitution.’
“The Constitution requires the President to hold consultations with all parliamentary groups, if no party holds the majority (Ed. Note – in Parliament). When you have a majority party, there is no problem at all, but when you don’t, you consult everyone, exactly with a view to bringing to light that possible majority, and you don’t pick just anyone or a random candidate, but the one who you are certain will be able to grab a parliamentary majority. But Mr. Basescu bypassed this procedure.
Now I see that he invents another rule, I do not know where he took it from. He claims having made the parties a concession by not designating for Premier the representative of the party with most M Ps. What sleeve did he get this trick from? There is no such rule anywhere in the world,” argued the former head of state.
Ion I liescu reminded that back in 2004 PSD was the party with the broadest representation, but added that “President Basescu didn’t bother to even think about that and blackmailed the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) and the former Humanist Romanian Party (PUR) into joining the ‘Justice and Truth’ Alliance.”
