‘I do not believe that the chiefs of the three political parties who are now playing with the national interest, and I mean here Mr. Geoana, Mr. Crin Antonescu and Mr. Marko Bela, do not know all this. I allow myself to say that persisting in maintaining political instability starts to consistently resemble an act of betrayal of the national interest, of the interests of the Romanian people. This is all I can say,’ Basescu said.
The President mentioned that a review mission of the International Monetary Fund is expected in Romania to see for itself whether or not the country has met its obligations for the first three quarters of the year and it may discuss even the review of the stand-by arrangement for 2010.
‘On December 15 there will be a meeting of the IMF board of directors that may approve some changes in the arrangement and it is clear that some changes will be necessary because Romania will not be able to meet all its pledged obligations by December 31,’ the President added.
He also said that Parliament is in no hurry to provide Romania with a Government and that this is an attitude in a longer series. He argued that there was a stormy leaving of Cabinet by eight ministers and a ‘no-comment’ dismissal of the Government, all amidst the ongoing economic crisis.
‘I find that delaying providing a stable Government when the country is in the throes of an economic crisis and doing your best to diminish the country’s credibility and also diminishing political stability is beyond irresponsibility. I am afraid that we are headed for a betrayal of the national interest. Instability diminish Romania’s credibility very much,’ said the President. Basescu on Monday afternoon attended a meeting at his presidential campaign headquarters.
