Loading ...President Traian Basescu said on Tuesday, during a debate at the Group for Social Dialogue, that the parliamentary elections should be held at the same time with the presidential ones. He added he would be willing to give up two years of his term, in case he was reelected and such a change in the legislation was proposed.
The head of state also suggested that the President’s and the Parliament’s mandates should take both either 4 or 5 years. He pointed out that in his opinion, two “demagogic ideas” should be given up: the one saying that the elected president should “forget” about the party that supported him and the one according to which the head of state is neutral from a political viewpoint.
“No president after 1989, has been politically neutral,” Base scu said. He underscored that a President can be required to be “neutral” but not to “forget” the political party that helped him become president.
