Austria backs Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area, has provided and further provides full support for the implementation of the necessary information technology, Austria’s Federal Minister of the Interior Maria Theresia Fekter told a press conference held jointly with Romanian interim Minister of Administration and the Interior Vasile Blaga.

Maria Theresia Fekter stressed that Austria supports the countries that seek Schengen Area membership but also expressed some criticism at the way the computerized Schengen information system SIS II is working, remarking that in her opinion, it has some shortcomings. “We must keep in mind that in the eventuality of an extension of the Schengen Area, this system should work.

For a quarter of a year now, we have been calling on the European Commission, established the tests that need to be run in December to see if this plan can be observed. Meanwhile, we support the candidates for Schengen accession, for their efforts to meet the required standards,” said the Austrian official.

On the other hand, Maria Theresa Fekter thanked Romania for organizing the Salzburg Forum in Bucharest, remarking that the importance of the event was given by the subjects approached, that ranged from security issues to enhancing international police cooperation for the combat of crime, against the backdrop of the deepening economic crisis.

“Stress was laid on the combat of intellectual property crime and credit card fraud, as well as the fight of child pornography. We also decided that the persons with operative responsibilities shall meet to establish the strategic directions for the combat of economic crime,” said the Austrian Minister of the Interior.
In his turn, interim Minister of Administration and the Interior Vasile Blaga highlighted the need for concerted efforts of Forum member states, a measure that is essential for “a safer Europe committed to serving its citizens.’

“Prevention is the best thing we can do to combat a serious international phenomenon. This implies exchanging information, best practices, coordinating preventive actions and launching new joint projects, given the transnational nature of crime,” B laga stressed. At the same time, the Romanian official said that the deadline for Romania’s joining the Schengen Area would be March 2011.
