‘It is a special year, because the milk and the meat have had very low prices and then we have to see whether we can increase the first tranche a little,’ the Romanian president said.
He expressed hope that the Government offers an answer to the farmers, by next Wednesday, stressing that if the Government officials fail announcing a solution, he himself will offer an explanation to the farmers.
‘I’ve assumed responsibility that these people should receive an answer on Wednesday,’ said Basescu, stressing that it is him who mediates between the farmers and the state institutions.
On the other hand, Basescu pointed out that both in 2007 and in 2008 the subsidies were given in two installments. ‘We’ll try to find a solution because the subsidy the state budget can grant them today is not enough to supply fodder over the whole winter,’ he stressed.
After President Basescu came out in front of the Cotroceni Palace to talk personally with the protesters, they gave up the rally announcing they are to return next week to hear the answer to their problems.
Outside his offices, Basescu talked for about a quarter of an hour with the protesters, who crowded to voice their discontent or to shake hands with the President.
