Romanian President Traian Basescu on Monday signed the decrees on opening of Romanian general consulates in Cahul and Balti, in the Republic of Moldova, reads a release of the Presidential Administration.

On October 20, the Romanian and Moldovan authorities signed the small border traffic agreement. The convention allows the Moldovan citizens in the localities close to the border to travel to Romania without needing a visa.

At the specific time, the Romanian interim Minister of Foreign Affairs Catalin Predoiu, hailed the fact that the Moldova authorities accepted the idea of Romania opening general consulates in Cahul and Balti, for in his opinion the decision confirmed the two countries’ engagement to act in a more determined manner in taking clear measures in the interests of their citizens.

Romania asked the approval for the opening of the two consulates as early as in 2006, in order to easy thus the process of granting visas to the Moldovan citizens more easily, after Romania’s accession with the EU on January 1, 2007. Initially, the communist authorities in Chisinau gave their approval for the opening of the two consular offices, but they later came with the condition Romania to accept two consular offices of the Republic of Moldova on its territory too, in Iasi (eastern) and Constanta (southeastern Romania).

Moreover, the former communist rule in Chisinau conditioned the signing of the small border traffic agreement on the signing of the Basic Political Treaty between the two countries and also of the agreement referring to the delimitation of the border.
