President Traian Basescu organized Monday, at Cotroceni Palace, a press conference with representatives of the local media in order to present some of the reasons why Romanians should vote for the reduction of the number of parliamentarians and for the elimination of one Parliament chamber.

The head of state explained that the political class reform started with the introduction of the uninominal vote must continue with Parliament institution’s reform through a cut in the number of MPs and the setting up of a sole decisional chamber.

“And this does not mean the state’s modernization. We enter a period when we cannot go on ignoring the democratic values: patriotism, equity, solidarity, social justice and justice. All are values, part of the day-by-day activities in a democratic state and of the citizens’ life in a democratic state”, said Traian Basescu. The head of state also named a few democratic values implemented during his mandate.

On solidarity, Traian Basescu stated that one of the most correct measures was the introduction of a mandatory minimum pension of 350 lei starting on Oct. 1, 2009.
“This does not mean solidarity on the part of the state, but on the part of 22 million Romanians because money is collected from Romanians’ taxes and not given by Basescu or Boc”, underscored the President.

At the social equity chapter, Traian Basescu came with the example of the new wage bill and the elimination of the special pensions which, according to him, were customized for the political clientele. But the President said that there are some other things which remain to be done and exemplified with the gap between children in the rural zones and those in the urban zones due to the educational system quality.
“Sole European Union integration does not solve the problems of society values”, said Traian Basescu. In Traian Basescu’s opinion, the same as in the educational system there is a gap between the urban and the rural zones as regards the medical assistance chapter.
