ME official, who participated on Monday in the talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), at the Ministry of Finance, focused on the state companies arrears, said that Metrorex should come up with very clear arguments why it asks for subsidies because the number of transported passengers jumped by 25 percent, to 750,000. In his opinion, Metrorex arguments in support of asking for state subsidies are weak and next year subsidies could be granted only to the National Company of Brown Coal in Petrosani, CFR Infrastrucutre and CFR Passengers.
Serban pointed out that IMF recommended to the Romanian authorities that the subsidies in case of the 10 monitored state companies should be eliminated in the period 2010 through 2013 and requested “graphics and evaluations”.
The State secretary estimated that at least seven of the ten state companies could resist even in the absence of subsidies.
He stressed that during the Monday talks with IMF an eventual wage freeze for the state companies staff was not approached, but the need to stay within the allocated wage funds, as well as the case of subsidized companies confronted with more difficulties.
Serban said that CNH Petrosani has a salary spending deficit of 35 million euros and 600 employees will be made redundant in 2009 and another 1,000 in 2010. ME official also reminded that subsidies to the mining sector dropped by 20 percent as against 2008.
IMF, World Bank and the European Commission delegation is in a mission in Romania till Nov. 9, when the results of negotiations carried out with the Romanian officials will be announced.
