PNL president Crin Antonescu wants rightist Gov’t, but not with Basescu

5 noiembrie 2009

Information in English

President of the National Liberal Party (PNL) Crin Antonescu, a candidate in the Nov. 22 presidential elections, wants a rightist government, but refuses to consider the possibility of forming after elections a Cabinet made up of members of the Liberal and of the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L) respectively, as the current head of state Traian Basescu suggested.

In his opinion, the only political formation with a right-wing ideology is the National Liberal Party.
“I too want a right-wing government to take over. My problem is that except for PNL, I don’t have much of a choice of a right-wing party in Romania, and if individual members of the Democratic Liberal Party still display right-leaning beliefs, in Mr. Traian Basescu’s case one cannot speak about any belief at all, of neither right nor left leaning,’ Crin Antonescu told an election rally in the southern city of Alexandria.

Moreover, the Liberal candidate for President harshly criticized the head of state, terming the latter’s statements on the subject as “scrounging” and an “embarrassing attempt” to win over some MPs or members of the Liberal formation.
