The Social Democratic Party (PSD) candidate for President Mircea Geoana, on Saturday Nov 7, continued his electoral tour in several localities in Transylvania (central western Romania) and went to Contanta County (south east), towards evening.

When in Turda (Cluj County -central west), Geoana said that Bucharest had to fulfill its duties to Romania’s historical provinces. ‘My visit to Cluj has a profound address, namely the political Bucharest has still to honor a duty toward Moldavia (eastern historical province) since the Small Union (1859 – editor’s note) and toward Transylvania since the Great Union (1918 – editor’s note).

The understanding was that we would grant resources for the balanced development of these historical provinces of Romania. The role Romania’s President has to play over the coming five years is that political Bucharest should start paying this still unhounored duty,’ PSD candidate said. During his visit to Cluj County, Geoana told the farmers that the financial recourses for the subsidies for the agriculture would be paid in due time in 2010.
Geoana also mentioned new jobs and subsidized house rents for the young people among his priorities.

The PSD candidate also thinks that a national programme is needed whereby the former mono-industrial small towns should be supported to overcome the economic hardships and the high unemployment level. Geoana also had a couple of messages for the Romanian economic environment.

‘I want to give a signal to the Romanian economic environment, which is put the highest pressure upon, nowadays, and without which we shan’t be able to re-launch the economy, and I want to ensure the revenues to the state budget and the social security,’ said Geoana, showing his discontent with the fact that the state owes two billion euros to the Romanian companies.

Geoana also spoke to the state employees, the teaching staff particularly, whom he showed his solidarity with. Constanta port can become the biggest Black Sea port, which is to turn Constanta and Dobrogea (southeastern province) into Romania’s economic lungs, Geoana told the electoral meeting in Medgidia (south-east), late on Saturday.
