In front of the supporters arrived from several western Romanian counties, Basescu reviewed the successes of his first mandate and pointed out the objectives of a future new term, among which the decrease of the flat tax to 14 percent, under the circumstances of the improvement of Romania’s economic state, and the dwindling of the number of parliamentarians, measure to come in force if the referendum on a unicameral parliament, due on Nov 22, succeeds.
Traian Basescu told Timinsoara’s inhabitants he knows that the Romanians do not live well, but they live a little bit better than in 2004. Romania’s President also stressed that although very many say that ‘nothing has been done’ during his term in office, Romania joint the European Union and the flat tax of 16 percent came in force, and he publicly condemned the communism’s crimes, and over two million files from the archives of the former political police were supplied to the National Council for the Study of Securitate Archives (CNSAS).
Also on an election tour at Cetatea, a locality situated in Dolj County (south) Basescu said that the Romanian village must be capitalized and brought to the civilization level similar to the town’s. Beside patriotism, it is required respect for the traditions, the history, and above all, we Romanians need solidarity (…).’ Basescu stressed.
He called the participants in the meeting to come and vote for the referendum on the unicameral parliament, on Nov 22.
The state must be reformed. A couple of days before, I signed the law whereby a few tens of governmental agencies are restructured. But this is not enough, Romania’s Parliament must be adjusted to the country’s current realities, we do not need two Chambers, which do the same thing, we need only one chamber and only 300 parliamentarians at the most, Romania’s head said.
