As many as 46 percent of Romanians deem that in Romania there is ethnic discrimination, although at a lower extent compared to the average of the European Union of 61 percent, reads a Eurobarometer, carried on Monday by the European Commission (EC).

However, the ratio of Romanians who believe in Romania are discriminations on grounds of age, disabilities, gender or sexual discrimination (compared to the average of 58 percent of EU citizens), 38 percent on grounds of gender (compared to the EU average of 40 percent) and 49 percent on grounds of sexual orientation (compared to the 47 percent average in the EU).

The survey shows that 54 percent of Romanians have friends, acquaintances or relatives of other religion than their own (compared to 64% of the EU citizens) and 55 percent of Romanians know people with different ethnic origins than their own (57 percent the average in the EU).

The hierarchy of potential criteria of discrimination at employment in Romania is very different compared to the conclusions in the EU. The first mentioned criterion, the same as in the EU, is the age. Romanian respondents placed on the following place disability, the accent of the candidate and the way he speaks, the way he dresses and the presentation in general.
